A blood test, done properly, close to home
Most private blood test companies post you a finger-prick kit or send you to a hospital phlebotomy clinic with a two-week wait for an appointment. PortsMed is different: a local clinic in North End where a clinician takes a proper venous sample, and where many of the most common tests are run on our own analysers while you wait.
That matters when you are worried. A full blood count, CRP or kidney function result in 30 minutes can tell you whether an infection needs treating today, and if it does, you can see one of our practitioners in the same visit.
For laboratory tests we use an accredited UK laboratory, with results typically back within a few working days. Either way you get a copy of your results and a clinician to explain them.

Blood test questions, answered
Do I need a GP referral for a private blood test?+
No. You can book any blood test on our website or by phone without a referral. If you are not sure which test you need, call the clinic and a clinician will help you choose.
How quickly will I get my results?+
Rapid tests analysed in our clinic, such as a full blood count, CRP and kidney function, are usually ready in around 30 minutes while you wait. Laboratory tests such as thyroid, hormone and allergy panels are sent to an accredited laboratory and typically reported within a few working days.
Do I need to fast before my blood test?+
Only for some tests. Cholesterol, glucose, iron and certain profiles are more accurate after 8 to 12 hours without food (water is fine). Testosterone is best tested between 8am and 10am. The booking page for each test tells you if any preparation is needed.
Who takes the sample?+
An experienced clinician at our clinic in North End, Portsmouth. We use standard venous sampling, not finger-prick kits, so the volume and quality of the sample is suitable for laboratory analysis.
Will someone explain my results?+
Yes. You receive a copy of your results and a clinician will go through anything outside the normal range and what to do next. If a result needs further investigation we can arrange it, or share the results with your NHS GP if you ask us to.
Can I combine several tests in one visit?+
Yes, and it is usually cheaper. Many of our blood tests carry a discount on the second and subsequent tests booked for the same day, and our health screens bundle the most useful markers into one price.
Do you test children?+
No. Our blood testing service is for adults aged 18 and over.
